Vedh 1.0: a critic’s review

Gaun ki geet mutuko, taar po bhayechha…

Taar po bhayechha?? now what on earth does that mean? The band here, seems to have focused more on the syntax rather than semantics; oblivious to the fact that now matter how strong the whole entity could be, simply a weak Achilles tendon could shatter the supreme.

Vedh ver1.0 – This is a critic’s review. You may not see flowery-flattery stuff in this text; instead be prepared for cut throat criticism that would hit you on the face: hard. Never the less, i shall comment on only those fact which i can justify.

Starting with the logo, sorry chetan, i hate to say this but its way below the mark. The gothic fonts with red fluid (supposedly blood) dripping down wholy contrasts the outlook of the band members and the songs they perform. The genre of the songs found in this album ranges from pop to puk rock. Metals fall under exclusions. At the back of the album you could see the logo afore mentioned with a tiled background! Had the background had some mystical outlook, the thing would’ve served just fine to supplement the logo. But a tiled background? Seems like Marilyn Manson trying to wear P. Diddy’s shoes!

Implementing the concepts of structured programming viz, the bottom-up approach, lets move on to the main cover. How would you imagine when someone comes upto you and speaks out of his/her band titled Vishnu, Bhramastra, Rudrakshya, Parikrama or even Vedh? well i would imagine it to be some cool metal or a hard rock band playing soft rock to some acceptable limits not anything like Kandara or The Axe. The graphics in the cover doesn’t seem to be homogenous at all though you can see obscure efforts and desperation to produce something unique. But it does support the band’s image playing alternative music.

Moving on to the songs, “Samikchhya” has always been my personal favourites. The lyrics’s too powerful besides the line saying ‘Taar po bhayechha’. I wouldn’t be surprised if the song makes up to the charts since the music’s so commercial. Track 2, “Harek Pal”, really sounds like a potpourri of ‘All the small things’ – Blink182 and Sum41.

Not bad for a 3 man band, Track 3 sounds like a mere album filler. Vocals here is really sounding as if Abishek’s been really influenced by Anil Singh. Somewhere the music, what you call ‘aaroha & awaroha’ in classical, has a close resemblence to ‘Antim Lakshya’ – Bhramhastra (Not the indian band) + ‘My Sacrifice’ – Creed. “Jaba ma dekhchhu”, the 4th track in the ablum has some nice lyrics. A song perfect to sing on a Valentine’s Day. But the song composition is weak and the guitarworks are hopeless. A good try but the SFX’s in the backgrounds suck. The casting matches with ‘Samjhi baschhu’ – 1974AD and ‘Chandrama’ – Lochan Rijal.

Abishek’s sounding like Nima Rumba in this track, track 5. The guitar fills suck, ya the guitar sweeps precisely at 3:01s sounds so very undemanded by the song. Plus the frequency of the bass guitar and the rythm guitar being played matches extensively so the song does have a considerable bit of warmth (only). Track 6 is a real humourous one. This one’s way below the acceptable limits. Its not even pop! I cannot comment on this one. It would be a waste of time and space.

“Naya Nepal”, track 7, is another one of my personal favourites. Though the music may sound like Creed, the lyric’s unique and the back vocals has really added to the essence of the song. I’m sure THIS is the Vedh the public would care about. The lead starting from 2:54s does reach up to the mark but it really blends with the background. A bit of unsharp masking could enhance the part by a great deal i guess. Same’s with the one at 4:14s.

If the Vedh would like to call the casting on drums: funk, i would say the snare sounds like a shoe horn. The tuning of the bass drum and the snare has a huge difference (though in the same scale) with no fillers in between. The bass has been attenuated way down. You wouldn’t even notice it unless you have an ear for it! The last song of the record, “Samikchhya – Unplugged” sounds really awful. First thing’s the recording’s way too poor and doesn’t even stand upto the National standards (Notice at the back of the cover that CDing has international underlined!) What an irony! In the record i bought there’s too much noise in it. Worse, the presence of the track seems for the tag rather than anything else.

As a whole, i would rate it 5.5 / 10. If Vedh is reading this, you people better hire a good guitarist and work out on your back vocals. The howls get a straight NO. Also better work out on your looks and speeches you make, since its them who make you.

Samikchhya garaun kasari ma, Sadikchhya rakhu kasari?
